Talamone

Talamone is a small medieval village that stands on a promontory overlooking the sea offering a suggestive panorama overlooking Monte Argentario and the islands of the Tuscan archipelago.
It maintains the appearance of a fishing village where it is possible to taste freshly caught fish both in the open sea and in the nearby Orbetello lagoon, in full seafaring atmosphere.

The town is located on top of a rocky promontory on the edge of the Maremma Natural Park. This proximity has made it a point of reference for all tourists who wish to visit the park by walking or cycling along its paths.

The panorama was watched over by the Rocca, the medieval fortress that is now the symbol of the town. The Rocca dominates the fishermen’s houses and the small port from above. Reaching it on foot is an easy and original excursion along steep streets.

It is said that under it is buried Talamone, uncle of the brave Achilles and hence the name of the village.

The small local port has always been fundamental to the economy of Talamone since the dawn of the town, in the Etruscan period.

The bay of Talamone was also a protagonist during the Risorgimento: here, in 1860, Garibaldi landed to recover the weapons needed for his Expedition of the Thousand. The character is remembered with a beautiful monument in the main square.

Visitors to the small village love its sandy beaches and cliffs, the crystal clear sea and the endless possibilities for fun, relaxation and outdoor sports. The village and its bay present the ideal conditions for sailing on a sailing boat and for practicing various water sports such as surfing, kite surfing and windsurfing.

In addition to excursions in the Maremma Natural Park, you can explore the lush Mediterranean vegetation that surrounds the village. In particular, along the coast there is a fresh and aromatic pine forest, ideal for playing sports even during the hottest days.

You can visit the Talamonaccio temple, an Etruscan temple dating back to the end of the 4th century BC. of which some ruins remain. There is also the aquarium of the Orbetello Lagoon which documents the flora and fauna of the lagoon area of the municipality of Orbetello. One of the gates to the Maremma Natural Park is also located in the structure and, moreover, there is one of the Tartanet centres, a veterinary clinic for the recovery and care of sea turtles.

Tastings of wine and local products are also organized in Talamone. The quality of Maremma’s agricultural products is well known throughout Italy: a holiday in the village is an unmissable opportunity to appreciate the local wine, oil, cured meats, meat and honey.
